WAYS TO ENABLE EQUAL PARTICIPATION OF THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED PUPILS AT THE KNOWLEDGE COMPETITIONS

Knowledge competitions have become a part of the schooling process of children. Blind and partially sighted children can also be successful pupils/students who have a talent for languages, natural sciences, history… To demonstrate their acquired knowledge, they need to be given an adapted exam sheets and they must have the right to use assistive technology (e.g., magnifier, computers with assistive software, braille display, braille typewriter).

They can compete in different subject fields and science disciplines such as: languages, logic, mathematic, natural sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, geography, history, etc.

To achieve an equal participation of blind or partially sighted in the competitions, the exam sheets need to be adapted and the pupils must be allowed to use assistive technology (e.g., electronic magnifiers, magnifying glasses, computer with screen magnifier or screen reader, braille display, Braille typewriter).

In cooperation and agreement with the competition commissions or the organizers (hereinafter the competition commission) adjustments for the visually impaired pupils need to be standardized. It is necessary:
 - that the competition commissions in time forward the exam sheets in advance so that they could be adapted.
- that the mentors at schools with blind and partially sighted pupils are notified about the procedure of applying to competitions and about accessing the adapted exam
- to establish a team of experts who will participate in the adaptation (the adaptations involve teachers of individual subject areas who review the competition sheet and submit proposals for adaptations, the designer of the text in Braille, digital or enlargement and the designer of the image material).

The adaptations for partially sighted are following:
• adaptation of the font type and size - Arial 18;
• suitable line spacing;
• special formatting and breaks (if possible individual task on one page);
• the page numbering is provided in the following form: 1/3, 2/3 in 3/3. Thus, the competitors know the number of pages their exam sheet is comprised of.;
• adaptation of images (higher contrast, elimination of unnecessary details or re-drawing);
• images are always situated directly after the text and not to the left or right of it.

Examples of adaptations for partially sighted:

Images 1 and 2: School competition in geography for primary schools 2018/2019, 15 January 2019, ZRSŠ. An example of the original exam sheet and the adapted version: formatting of the introductory information and task type: circle YES or NO. Author of the adaptation Jera Svetek.
Images 3 and 4: Competition in natural sciences Kresnička, 4ͭʰ and 5ͭʰ grades, 6 February 2018, DMFA Slovenia. An example of formatting a multiple choice task. Author of the adaptation Jera Svetek.

Adaptations and formatting for the blind include:
• preparation, formatting, breaks and print of the text in printed braille or the preparation of the text in accessible digital form;
• conversion of mathematic formulas into a linear mathematical notation for the blind;
• preparation of images in tactile (simplified images, re-drawn, text in Braill needs to be added);
• making 3D models (to substitute some of the images).
